Or, l’élément feu n’est nullement la thématique des oeuvres de notre compatriote Rishi, mais le matériau esthétique même de ses expériences performatives . Le spectateur non averti ne verrait dans ses oeuvres qu’une peinture moderne conventionnelle sur toile, montée sur un châssis, représentant un espace pictural meublé d’éléments structurés dans une certaine ordonnance. Ceux qui ont une culture picturale qui outrepasse les impressionnistes (et qui ont déjà mis les pieds dans un musée d’art contemporain lors de leurs voyages en métropole) reconnaîtront à la rigueur des indices du processus de création : collage, brûlage, grattage, effacement, superpositions , décollage…des techniques avant-gardistes du modernisme du 20ème … 
Mais il n’est pas besoin de faire le pèlerinage culturel de tous les MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) et tous les MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) de la planète pour avoir une lecture intelligente de la démarche de Rishi. La gestuelle corporelle de l’acte de création est imaginable dans les moindres tableaux , toute l’orchestration de ses interventions est visible dans chaque tableau. Comme dans les tableaux de Jackson Pollock ou de certains surréalistes partisans de l’écriture automatique tel André Masson (dont j’ai plusieurs lithographies achetées à une époque où l’on pouvait se les payer..) l’événement de la création est célébré tel un rituel incantatoire. Chez les surréalistes, exploration d’états psychiques subconscients. Chez Rishi le rituel performatif a un tout autre sens…histoire d’exorciser mes démons, me dira-t-il au cours de notre dialogue… Auto-thérapie alors ! Non. Il avoue ne pas porter beaucoup d’intérêt à l’œuvre abouti, à la finalité de l’entreprise. Il ne tapisse pas les murs de sa maison de ses oeuvres. Il déteste ça. Il préfère la compagnie de l’œuvre de quelques confrères. Il est, avec Fabien Cango , les seuls plasticiens de l’île à manifester dans leur ambiance de travail un franc intérêt pour les préoccupations artistiques de leurs contemporains locaux. 
Sans vouloir trop froisser la brochette d’autres plasticiens post-coloniaux rencontrés dans leurs ateliers en 2012/13 en vue de cet ouvrage de référence encore inédit, personne à part ces deux-là ne m’a montré avec autant de fierté la présence du travail de leurs confrères dans l’espace consacré à leur propre création. 
Cet aspect de sa sensibilité a instantanément éveillé une résonance en mes propres concepts de livre. Cette conscience/nécessité de contextualisation inhérente à la modernité, et à toute expression artistique, quoique l’on dise. Cette volonté à définir sa condition d’artiste-plasticien en premier lieu par rapport au contexte insulaire, archipélique dirait Glissant, et par vague successive au reste du monde outre-mer. La contemporanéité de cette approche par rapport à la mondialisation de la notion de l’art m’a d’emblée interpellé… 
La carrure imposante de sumotori de Rishi lors de notre première rencontre le 27.03.2012 impressionne. Mais la voix et le sourire du personnage rassurent. 
Un peu essoufflé aprés l´escalier qui mène à l´étage, il s´arrète, et nous permet ainsi de jeter un coup d´oeil sur les nombreux petits formats de sa collection privée, soigneusement alignés au mur, dans le couloir qui mène à la chambre où il nous montrera ses propres oeuvres. On reconnait vite un Nagalingum un peu éthéré. Il y a aussi une eau-forte, d´excellente facture, d´un artiste anglais. Et d´autres oeuvres… 
L´exiguité de la pièce ne nous permet pas le recul idéal pour bien voir les grands formats de Rishi. Et le déplacement des oeuvres pose un certain problème. Mais on parvient quand même à bien voir bon nombre de tableaux, avant d´engager une conversation. Dehors il pleut.
Profitant d´une accalmie, on a pu voir, en traversant la rue, l´ancien atelier de l´artiste, provisoirement inutilisable, et le prochain en cours de construction. Rishi, un passionné, nous décrit en détails le scénario de ses prochains projets de performances un peu „incendiaires“… J´aurai bien souhaité pouvoir filmer un de ces jours une de ces séances performatives un peu rituelles de la naissance de feu d´un „Seeruttun“…

S.G.S. - Rishi, on est devant tes tableaux. Tu as une technique assez particulière. Le processus de création implique chez toi toutes sortes d´expérimentations, avec une multitude de produits, surtout des produits chimiques et le feu, le feu qui est catalyseur symbolique de l´ensemble du geste de création. Ta méthode de travail est un peu théâtral, disons le , et parfois tu employes des matériaux très inhabituels. Tu travailles donc avec des matériaux de récupération, des vieux jeans, etc. Peux -tu nous expliquer un peu ton travail?
R.S. - Je suis diplomé en textiles et j´ai suivis des cours d´arts plastiques au MGI. J´ai essayé de m´inspirer de ma grande expérience des textiles pour mes travaux de création. J´ai utilisé des teintures pour la toile, que j´ai combiné aux couleurs traditionnelles pour obtenir des réactions. Il y a des réactions imprévisibles qui se déclenchent pour produire toutes sortes d´effets que j´essaie de maitriser.
S.G.S. - Donc, quand tu commences, tu ne sais pas où ça va te mener. Tout est aléatoire. Mais tu as la certitude que des réactions vont révéler des résultats que tu assumes, ou que tu rejettes. Par exemple, tu m´ as montré tout à l´heure un travail, qui n´a pas été à la hauteur de tes expectatives
R.S. - Oui, cela arrive, des fois. Tout dépends parfois de la durée d´exposition à la chaleur, de la réaction ou du dosage du produit chimique. Tout dépend d´un tas de facteurs. Au fait, c´est très difficile de produire deux fois la même chose. C´est pratiquement impossible. Le temps peut jouer un rôle important, surtout le vent. Quelque chose qui vient s´ajouter à la peinture quand je pratique un brûlage peut produire une réaction inattendue…
S.G.S. - Ton approche est donc l´expérimentation. Tu as des matériaux de base… Et tu travailles beaucoup avec le feu.
R,S. - Il faut donc avoir subi beaucoup d´échecs avant d´obtenir des résultats acceptables. J´ai brûlé pas mal de tableaux avant de considérer des travaux comme réussis. Mais je suis plutôt satisfait de quelques pièces.

S.G.S. - Tu as donc des critères d´excellence. 
R.S. - Je le sens quand c´est bien, et cela me procure une grande satisfaction. Un tableau, c´est, pour ainsi dire, quelque chose qui sort de mon intérieur… Je ne voudrais pas faire quelque chose qui me generait.
S.G.S. - Est-ce que tu le considères comme un besoin, cette activité?
R.S. - Oui, c´est un besoin vital. Je fais ça comme pour exorciser mes démons.
La plupart des titres de mes tableaux sont tristes.
S.G.S. - je constate que tu as une prédilection pour le bleu. C´est la couleur qui domine dans tes travaux. C´est la couleur qui te réussit le mieux. C´est mon appréciation personnelle. Prenons ce tableau. Pourquoi avoir choisi le bleu?
R.S. - Le thème du tableau était triste, donc il fallait que ce soit bleu.
S.G.S. - Tes tableaux ont des titres; dans le livre de Ramduth, tes oeuvres ne portent pas de titres. Le titre est-il important pour la compréhension de tes tableaux? 
R.S. - Oui et non. Comme je peins surtout pour moi-même, cela importe peu. Une fois qu´il est sorti de moi, le tableau m´intéresse peu. Quand je termine un tableau, je le mets souvent dans un coin. 
Il n´a plus pour moi l´intéret qu´il possédait pendant que je le réalisais. Comme je te disai précédemment, je peins surtout mes moments sombres. Je ne veux pas les avoir toujours devant moi, ces moments sombres.
S.G.S. - Je reviens toujours à ce tableau. Ce tableau bleu. Là, tu proposes quelque chose, et j´ai, moi, une lecture individuelle. Je l´ai vu comme ça, je suppose qu´un autre spectateur va trouver autre chose. Est-ce que cela te plait cette idée que le spectateur interprète ton oeuvre à sa façon. 
R.S. - L´art contemporain, c´est comme ça, non?
S.G.S. - Tes tableaux sont très ouverts. On peux les continuer dans tous les sens. 
R.S. - C´est pour laisser le spectateur s´évader. Et penser à autre chose. Et continuer à réfléchir… Sur le thème , sur la couleur, sur le sens que ca porte…. 
S.G.S. - Est-ce que tu penses que c´est un handicap pour un plasticien de vivre son art sur une île. Aujourd´hui , avec les moyens modernes de la technologie la communication est facile, et il y a une grande proximité des communautés de créateurs, qu´en penses-tu? 
R.S. - Non, je ne crois pas que ce soit un handicap d´être insulaire. Un handicap, peut-être, parce que les manifestations les plus importantes ne se passent pas ici. À part ca, je crois qu´avec l´internet on a une ouverture sur le monde.
S.G.S. - penses-tu qu´on est très Mauricien en étant très insulaire? Crois- tu que le Mauricien se définit par son insularité?
R.S. - Non, je n´y crois pas tellement. Je crois que si mon travail ne portait pas de signature et pas de titre, il aurait pu être le travail de n´importe quel autre habitant de la planète, non?
